Home > Small Business Phone Systems > Faqs > Why Are Pots Lines Going Away

Why are POTS lines going away?

The short answer is that copper telephone lines are becoming too expensive to maintain. Telecommunication companies are migrating to newer technologies, like VoIP solutions and fiber-optic cables. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) oversees the transition from analog to digital telecommunications services in Canada. Traditional copper-wire landlines are being phased out in Canada.

If you’re still relying on analog equipment, it’s advisable to make plans now to upgrade. By 2025, the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), which supports traditional landline phones using century-old technology, will be switched off. After this, you won’t be able to make phone calls via landline without an internet connection. So, if you’re still using a landline, consider exploring wireless alternatives or internet-based phone services to adapt to the changing landscape.
